A network technology second to none
What is Carrier Ethernet?
Carrier Ethernet is a networking technology second to none and -
in our case - in full Carrier Class. Most people know Ethernet from
the cable that often connects a computer to a local enterprise
(Ethernet) data network. Carrier Ethernet is a further development
of this standardized and popular technology so that it applies to
large networks, high capacity, high quality, and long distances.
Carrier Ethernet is a Layer 2 technology with a range of
benefits.
What are the benefits of Carrier Ethernet?
Firstly, Carrier Ethernet is a Layer 2 technology. This means
that everything on a Carrier Ethernet network uses hardware
addressing and hardware switching to move data from one point to
another. This means that Carrier Ethernet is transparent to IP
addresses, and that Carrier Ethernet thus is a much more flexible
and efficient transport technology than for example MPLS when it
comes to IP traffic. Secondly, Carrier Ethernet is highly
standardized and offers a secure path to higher speeds and a host
of future application.
How do you use Carrier Ethernet in practice?
Virtually all of GlobalConnect's products (excluding SDH) are
based on Carrier Ethernet. Our nationwide fiber network is the
physical layer, and Carrier Ethernet operates perfectly on top of
it. All network connections, such as Ethernet
Private Lines and Private LANs are delivered as
Ethernet connections and are about as simple to connect as an
Ethernet socket in the wall. These connections are of a very high
quality and can be effectively used for real-time applications such
as IP telephony, video telephony, mirroring servers, and much
more.
