If Denmark is to continue to be one of the leaders of the global Information Society, we need new visions and new regulations within the IT and telecommunications industries in Denmark. This is the opinion of GlobalConnect's founder and CEO, Niels Zibrandtsen in his assessment of last month's report on the Danish IT and telecom future as released by the Danish Ministry of Science's Committee on High Speed Broadband.

- First and foremost we need to provide fibre connections to everyone in Denmark. Businesses that have content or services to sell should be given equal access to an open fibre network. This is clearly the fastest way to develop the market, and it would also make it attractive for network operators to expand fibre networks further. The approach would be of benefit to everyone in society right across the board. But a forced opening up of all Danish fibere networks can only happen through new regulation, says Niels Zibrandtsen.

Niels Zibrandtsen also believes that Danes must jointly arrive at a new vision for how we are to develop our common future and how we are to foster innovation. First and foremost we must make sure that we create a fertile enviroment for the development of innovations in the form of new applications and services that can be exported.

- Right now it is clear that investments in new applications and services within the IT and telecommunications industries largely will go to large foreign companies. Such investments will therefore not help in developing or creating new Danish companies. We should renew our support of domestic entrepreneurs and innovators. This is extremely important in a globalized world where we will see more and more competition from huge countries with vast resources, such as India and China, says Niels Zibrandtsen.
