Companies in Denmark and Germany can now link up directly to the
world's biggest Internet hub, AMS-IX in Amsterdam. GlobalConnect is
the first telecommunications provider in Denmark capable of
supplying customers with a direct AMS-IX connection enabling IT and
Internet companies to exchange traffic directly with 360 of the
world's biggest telecommunications and Internet service providers.
GlobalConnect expects the service to be available in October.
Peering agreements with the biggest
companies
The idea is simple: Through an Ethernet-port at GlobalConnect
premises in Taastrup, Kolding, or Hamburg you get direct,
high-speed transmission access to the AMS-IX hub, after which you
are free to enter into peering agreements with the approximately
360 companies represented on AMS-IX. And there are lots of benefits
of such a scheme, says product manager at GlobalConnect, Torben
Brieghel Jensen.
- First of all you can save money by not having to pay for IP
Transit services, which are normally billed by data volume. The
exchange of data through peering is normally free. You can also
expect a higher quality on Internet connections to the big service
providers on AMS-IX because your Internet traffic will pass through
fewer network hubs when you're exchanging traffic directly, says
Torben Brieghel Jensen.
A socket in the wall
The new solution - which will be offered on the name Direct
AMS-IX Port - will be ready for delivery in the form of a 1 Gbps
port. Existing customers without installed equipment in one of
GlobalConnects data centres in Taastrup, Kolding, or Hamburg can
choose to combine the Direct AMS-IX Port service with a
transmission link to their premises running on GlobalConnects fibre
network.
